Movie Review: The Fly (1958)

Starring Vincent Price, this movie is a classic.  This movie was entertaining although a bit naïve.

First off, the science in this movie is non existent.  If the "disintegrator" would merge a fly to a human, it stands to reason that it would merge any and all matter.  Air bubbles in the blood stream comes to mind as well as clothes distributed throughout the body..  The viewer is led to believe that the atoms are arranged in exactly the same manner that they are dissembled.  So there should be no chance of mixing of the genes.

Secondly, if he did mix with the fly it would have been one mass instead of two.  His body would have attacked the fly parts and all would have been good.

Third, Lets just say that the transposing of parts was feasible.  Then, the fly head should not have enlarged and the human head shouldn't have shrunk.

On to the good.

This movie keeps your interest.  It starts off as a murder mystery, not who did it, but why.   It was fun though, and I loved the politeness in which the detectives were received.  The classic scene where the fly with the human head is trapped in the web is worth the price of admission.  Like I said, it is a classic and it stars Vincent Price as the brother of the fly.  It should be viewed to complete any movie buffs repertoire.

X-Men: Relatively spoiler free

The beauty of comic storylines is that you can continue them in a serial method, thus creating grand storylines and characterizations that would not be possible in a single issue or in three two hour movies.

I liked the movie in the theaters, but the more I dwell on it the less I like it. I hope they don't make anymore x-men movies. Two hours is not enough to establish a team of superheroes and a team of supervillians.

Hollywood crapped this movie out to make money. Lets bring back all the stars, bring in some other big names, make a lot of stuff blow up, do some amazing special effects, and kill characters for shock value, it will make millions. Oh yeah, write a story loosely base on this famous one to get the fans hopes up.

Halle Berry sucked for the third straight x-men movie. Sure they made the character cooler with special effects, but that doesn't solve her acting problem.

Taken solely as an action movie, it was good. Taken as an X-Men movie, I cried myself to sleep.

This movie took x-men cannon and urinated on it right after they used it to wipe their butts. All the movies have changed some aspects of the story, but this movie borders on blasphemy. The mistreated characters that are well loved and very established. They took several great X-Men story arcs and reduced them to a mediocre story in which to have an epic battle.

I will admit the battle was cool and the team tactics were very cool, but they changed too much for it to be completely enjoyable.

I was disappointed to say the least.

I have an English degree. I love literature. In the literary world, people have been trying to rework classics for years. It never works. No retelling of Romeo and Juliet will ever even pale in comparison to the original. No matter how many times they make Great Expectations into a movie, it always sucks. The nerve of the people to think they are worthy of changing/rewriting the works of Dickens and Shakespeare among oh so many others. Each writer has their own style and cadence and the stories they write work within that style and cadence.

Lets face it screenwriters are not the most talented writers in the world and we let them go wild on some of literatures classics. The X-Men are literature to me. The old story arcs are classics and deserve respect. Something that fan fiction and Hollywood are incapable of showing.

                Unsettling news

                *****X-Men Spoiler Alert*****

Juggernaut  does not get his power from the Cyttorak gem in the movie.  In the movie he is a mutant.  Well, at least they aren't going to give Calisto octopus like appendages for arms.  Oh wait, they are.

Most reviews seem to indicate that they try to do too many storylines and too many characters for one movie.

                I have a suggestion:  X-Men the series.

                It arises with the sun

                yes, yes, yes

May sweeps madness is soon over my friends

the time for staying in doors, staring at the small glowing box (hey some of us can't afford big screen HDTV flat panels yet. . . but the bank robbery's still planned for next wednesday) shall soon be over and we the freed people of the land shall vencher out into the sunline, into the bright light...

get into our cars and drive to the nearest, darkest cinemaplex for

                (drum roll please)

                the SUMMER MOVIE SEASON

(the crowd cheers- or jeers depending on your social life)

2006 has been the Year of the Keanu

(boy have i been smiling a bit this annuam)

it started with the rental of Thumbsucker-
bizarre, weird, emotionally pretentious, and really with out much intellectual depth
Perfect for the Cannes Film festival bourgeois

but I LIKED IT- because the Keanu was Key to the crux of the story

                all cheer the Keanu

biased? blinded by his beautiful countenance? oblivious to any shortcomings detected by others unversed in the philosophy of the surf?

                And, your point is?

                anywhooo

can't wait til June 16: the LAKE HOUSE

yes, this movie may primarily appeal to only half of the human population. but as part of that half that really hopes the other will offer to pay for the movie & snacks, i yell-

                it's a WINNER

                check out it's site

                http://thelakehousemovie.warnerbros.com/

but in the meantime before the Keanu sunrise

                we have (dumm, da,da, dum)

                X-MEN 3

                have i been geeked?

                yes

have i been drooling in expectation?

of course (but don't tell anyone, that's right up there with snorting when you laugh. how tacky)

am I dissapointed with the so/so 50/50 reviews?

                well. . .

didn't have the highest hopes for the film with all the director flip flop, toning down of the Dark Phoenix plot spoiler leaks, absence of Nightcrawler pre-release info I've been reading for the past YEAR

but when I saw the trailer

(big flash of light appears overhead)

anyway, from the reviews- without revealing any 2nd hand spoilers, the movie will be

                okay

enjoyable, gifts some moments of spectacular eye candy

                but no big emotionally push

the Fan boys might even be tempted to break out ther TIKI lanterns and start a fire

but overall, it should be worth the $7.50 (or $5.5o since there's no way i'm gonna pay the extra for a night time viewing of this)

yes, i will be there opening weekend
yes, i've already made room on my DVD shelf for the 2-disc special edition (to be released around Novemeber / Decemeber)
                and i won't be dissappointed

fortunately I'm not a comic book fanboy that literally pukes when they don't get everything exactly right (but as a somewhat shallower fangirl I do balk at Storm's ridiculous hair cut)

                anywhoooo

twill be a nice filler as I wait for the glorious glow of the summer film biggie

                THE SCANNER DARKERLY

                http://movies.yahoo.com/feature/ascannerdarkly.html

                yes, you heard me correct

the new adventures of Supertorpedo man
will NOT draw me into the theater to help them recover their $300 million decompensation moment

I shall wait for a more intriguing, gutsy, and artistically THERE flick

                besides. . . .

                KEANU's in it

                Big Smile

p.s. anyone else somewhat geeked about Miami Vice?
as a former member of the Don Johnson appreciation club (i.e. the playground stalker crew) i am somewhat excited to see how this remake/rehash fares

with Micheal Mann at the helm (oh yeah, Collateral) i'm pretty siked
besides, Colin Ferrell's kind of cute in a don't touch without gloves kind of way

the MPAA will get my money, on opening weekend and on the DVD release date 3 months later

                i shall now take my leave. . . .

k- you could at least ACKNOWLEDGE my exit for the evening with a comment

Quirky Quips from a Media mushhead

first of all i say thank you Budd (depite the webwide groan) for granting me a bit of cyberspace to plant my pointless rants on all things trival

i shall endeaver to waste this space well

and the ever popular, yet controversal

                Time for TV talk- YEAH!!!

                MAY 2006 sweeps week

was TV geek nirvana. I'm surprised my eyeballs didn't dry out from excessive use
                Here's my recap

                Smallville- season finale
The opening sequence was EXCELLENT. For 5 years they've shown us the beautiful panorama of the Kent farm. Last night- all was dark and twisted.
Overall the episode was good, but not great. Smallville have been consistently know for its blow you away finales. This one was good but must fall to the bottom of the list of greatest finales.
The episode was really rushed and scene contexts were WAY TO contrived (when did Chloe get super speed? b/c there's No Way she could have jumped from the daily planet to the Kent farm then back to the daily planet before 4:30pm. Oh wait, she just walked from one set platform to the other one, Know I get it)
Hate the fact that a mind wipe is in the wind.
Still love the show and would like to be seated in front of the tube next season for the opener

p.s. it REALLY is too bad they couldn't get Dean Cain to play Zod and had to concoct the last minute weak finale that they did. dissappointment city.
                ********************
My name is Earl- season finale
Pretty good. Didn't LOL as much as usual. Best lines "old lady karma". Anybody translate what Catalina said? I know it was a comment about the show's freshman season. The first time they did that trick it was sneaky and organic. This time felt contrived and gimmicky
Side note- wonder if the set closed down May 1st due to the Latino worker walk out?
                *********************
                The Office- season finale
I must say- I've gone from mildly disliking this show to loving it. Mouth fell open when Jim did what Jim did- great. Best lines (paraphrased of course)
                - one day I hope to be able to say a great AIDS joke
                - I hate how you are always ruining everything that I try to do
                - the whole scene between Michael (clueless bigot) and the warehouse manager. Can't remember what phrase it was that he taught him, but it's a classic
                - Jim's telekinesis powers. Poor Dwight, can't even make a bobble head bobble
                Snicker snicker Guffle out loud
                **********************
That 70's Show- series ending documentary
Watched during commercial breaks. Wasn't a major fan of the show but Kelso and Fez are great.
                the finale two epsiodes
eh. "acquired" them from my lovely friends in wwland. wasn't overly impressed, but then not an avid follower of the show. wish there was more substantive closer behind the Eric/Donna story. sad to see Topher Grace's legs were still skinny- isn't he playing Venom in the the new Spidey? maybe the muscles will come later
                ************************
                Boston Legal- season finale
only watch the show for the shatner. the blue state perspective of this show often turns me blue with apoplexy. but it's well worth the viewing just to watch 'DENNY CRANE, DENNY CRANE'. great stuff here. loved the 'i know the camera's in the forground' dialogue. most sitcoms dream of one day being 1/4 as funny as Boston Legal
                *************************
                Prison Break- season finale
what can i say? SWEET. not as complex as LOST and not as character rich as BSG, but the show is no remote flipper. must watch, must watch again. funny how the the one's left behind (or at least some of them) have a better chance of survival. and as much as i dislike the daffy turncoat ways of Tweener, i cheered loud for him at the end. no spoilers, please (smirk).

and randoms musings from the week of MAY 12TH

                **********************
7 minute sneak preview of X-men III
I MUST SAY- IT ROCKED !!!!! (capitals used to indicate intensive and screaming) Almost feel like imitating the Star Wars geeks and standing in line opening day
                The movie's going to rock
                The movie's going to ROCK
THE MOVIE"S GOING TO ROCKET SHIP ROCKET!!!!!!!!!!!
(ah-hem, maybe a little on the fanatical side)
                **********************
LOST- web re broadcast of the Eko/Locke episode
Did anyone else have a Twin Peaks or a Sisko & the prophets flashback with the first vision?
But the second one BLEW me away (not literally, but it was VERY GOOD)
Sorry about Hurley's lost (especially since we will never have the satisfaction on seeing how their link was revealed nor given any more clues as to what it all means)
The show is great however I have now come to the realization that we WILL NEVER KNOW what's up
Smirk- but I'll at least keep watching

                Martians

NPR (National Public Radio) has a show called Studio 360. This weekend they did a show on Violence and had a reading of Jack Handy's "My Speech to the Martians." As a fan of senseless violence, this short essay had me rolling. Below, I will post a few of my favorite quotes.

But you can’t kill an idea. And that idea is: me chasing you with a big wooden mallet.

If you will not free me, at least deliver a message to Earth. Send my love to my wife, and also to my girlfriend. And to my children, if I have any anyplace. Ask my wife to please send me a bazooka, which is a flower we have on Earth.

You say your civilization is more advanced than ours. But who is really the more “civilized” one? You, standing there watching this cage? Or me, with my pants down, trying to urinate on you?

The Studio 360 site has an audio file of the reading available for download. The The New Yorker has the full text.
