what did the scanner see?
Yes, yes , yes my keanu fix was satiate by this masterpiece
LOOK out below **** th're be spoilers in ta water ****
when i first watched the online clip where Keanu waxed philosophical about the scanner seeing either darkly or clearly, i was TOTALLY clueless. But since i'm a groupie i wasn't going to let my comprehension limitations hinder me from checking out the flick. and as the one hopeful conclusion of the film, the scanner did indeed see clearly. . . .
Drugs rot the brain. just as those ominpresent and completely ingrained into my subconcious commericals 'this is your brain on drugs' enforced, the idealized liberties and entertainment quality of pharmaceuticals cost one's very life breath. drugs "stands for dumbness and despair and desertion ... D is finally death, slow death."
This is one of the most crucial points espoused by the film but it is by no means the most poignant one
The role of the agent, the one who signed up to protect and serve- the full truth of what it means to commit one's life to a cause, and by doing so granting one's leaders free use / or abuse of one's life. The harshness of being blindsidely slapped in the face with a Spock-like choice, 'the needs of the one' is the hidden landing pad of this awesome roller coaster ride. many critics out there have called it a downer ending because of this point but i found it vivid and refreshing like ice cold water on a 101 degree day. man it hurts going down the throat but, ahhh, don't you feel much better? hats off to the law enforcement personal who reliquish their liberities for the protection of everyone else.
but the tragedy of it all- it was a duty, and it was a choice. Evidenced by Arctor's pay cut. the film has a bit of 'born on the 4th of July' sentiment slipped in that i don't see addressed by the online reviewers. maybe because to do so, opps, is too much of a spoiler but i think its a philosphical debate worthy of at least 3 hours of chat time.
Complaints about the rotoscoping are to be ignored. As i realized AFTER the conclusion of the film, we were watching a scanner playback of Arctor's life. animated, two dimensional and everything else but real. brillant!
i'm glad that my summer movie hyped up hopes were not dashed this year. kind of like the feel good buzz i had after watching Spidey 2 and LOTR: the fellowship i was contented; and intellectually stimulated - WHOA!!!
warning the film does have a flesh scene so beware of unneccesary pandering of the sensual. once again hollywood's influence on pandering to the lowest common demoniatior for no reason except just because was perpetuated. tragic because otherwise the film would be perfect and possibly a good learning tool for the young and impressionable.
as far as the enterainment value- it was SO there. both i and the packed theatre were rolling; especially when Downey was on the scene. can't wait to read his memoirs to see if this film had any impact on his life choices (sadly Less than Zero had a less than zero impact on him)
in conclusion- recommendable with a red flag warning to close your eyes when Arctor gets to reminiscing about whoever was in the bed with him
side point- nudity is inappropriate for all but why is it acceptable to parade women around for cannibalistic lusting but the masculine form gets proper concealment? not that i'm advocating a woman's lib riot but just want to shine a spot light on another sample of artsy hypocrisy. for dramatic effect? pluezzezz
here's a link to a brief book review of the original text. Although i haven't read the novel, the below description is quite apt for the cinematic version:
"Caustically funny, eerily accurate in its depiction of junkies, scam artists, and the walking brain-dead"

below you'll find a blog discussing the Russian fantasy/horror flick Night Watch. if we still communicated by paper, i'd have the pleasure of lighting that article with flame- OUCH!
i watched the film, in Russian reading the subtitles, and was impressed by the epical nuances exposed by the film. a lot is lost in the dubbed translation; after watching the film and the DVD extras i flipped the disk over to check out the english dub. i couldn't even make it through the first half- the most powerful scences were reduced to rubble by the first grade level dialogue substitutions.
but even if the dub was watched (cold shivers), you should still be able to appreciate the film's masterful point: exposing the ramifications of good, for the sake of compromise and truce, accepting and even enabling evil. this dilution of the prestine nature of good, just as in the film, leads to the adoption of evil's character and the loss of good's appeal. it's like eating a re-frozen Wendy's frosty; it tastes almost the same but you can't get around the freezer burn after taste or the messed up texture. in the trash it goes. which thus explains the film's ending.
the vortex B story is an extra plot that feels some what superfluous. however, when your consider its subtext message, you realize that it's helping to re-enforce the disasterous impact of flippantly reponding to serious things. the B story fits with the overall movie plot, but it's like the caulk between the tiles; it covers about the same surface area, it runs its own path, but without it, the tiles just don't stay put like they should.
anticipatory heart flutters have already started as i await the DVD release of the film's sequel Daywatch.
love the Keanu
encourage the Keanu

Necropolis

This was quite possibly the worst movie ever made. I now own it thanks to it being on sell for $2 at the grocery store. It had a misleading cover and title that made me believe that zombies would be overrunning New York. This seemed like a cool concept so I picked it up.
The story is about a witch that needs a ring and the blood of a virgin in order to secure eternal life. So there are almost no zombies in it. The only walking dead are her minions and they do not feed on flesh but ectoplasm that is distributed to them in the same manner that milk is distributed to puppies by their mother. The actress, in some surprisingly good (in comparison to the rest of the movie) special effects, grows additional sets to accommodate the other four zombies. The sole purpose of these zombies is for this feeding because they do nothing else in the movie.
The acting is bad, the plot is worse, and the sound quality was the worst. I think they used the mic on the camera for the whole movie. I would suggest this to people having a MST3K night wanting a movie they can just rip to shreds. Seriously, the movie is so bad that it is funny.

Nightwatch (Russian Horror/Fantasy) & Ultraviolet
Let me just say, that I expected Nightwatch to be reasonably okay and Ultraviolet to be pretty, but stupid. They both stunk.
There may be spoilers, so quit reading here.
Nightwatch
This is a Russian horror/fantasy movie. For some reason the only version I could rent had only English, French and Spanish dubs and subtitles. There was no version of Russian with English subtitles, so that may be why it stunk, but I doubt it.
It had potentially cool elements. Many of the individual ideas were cool and seemed interestingly foreign. The werebear & weretiger being good guys and partners was cool. The chick who was being punished by being imprisoned as a frozen owl was cool too. The Russian style witch who got snagged at the beginning was good too.
The war between light & dark was fairly typical, but not necessarily bad.
Then there was the bad stuff. Which to me was primarily that it didn't know which plot to make the main plot and just was totally helter skelter in plot construction.
None of these is really emphasized much at all and they quickly hop between them and resolve them in like 5 minutes a piece. The chosen one in a rooftop stands off decides to choose the evil side because he is annoyed with his long lost father. He doesn't run away from all these weirdos and say, "Leave me outta this ya freaks!" like he should have. He seemed a decent kid and didn't seem like he'd join the evil side and so the decision is flippant and pointless to me.
Secondly, I am sick to death of the "chosen one" bull puckey that gets used over and over and over again. It's like we have this demented messiah complex that the world will be saved or destroyed by one special person, when the truth is we all play a part and that history happens because of movements, not one person as much. Sure, there are singular people that push have made the decisions, but they are usually just riding a crest of a movement and are not sem-divine. It leads to a kind of authority figure worship and is highly undemocratic in essence. But that's my pet peeve and not really that relevant.
The stupidest thing of all was the video game the bad guy kept playing designed with characters and events that later happen in the movie. Utter lameness.
Update - Just spoke to Mary. Videogames were supposedly plans & practice for setting up the dude so that he could get control of the chosen one. I still think it's incredibly lame. Sorry. Maybe if I can find the Russian version I'll give it another shot. It may also be because I don't believe in a black and white universe, but a more realistic world that runs from black to gray to white.
Rating: *
Ultraviolet
This movie is very pretty. This is the guy who made Equilibrium and suffered from the same exact problems. It is very pretty, but that's about it. What's funny is that it was more like Aeon Flux than the Aeon Flux movie was.
Anyhoo here are crits & praise in random order as I recall them.
Violet's costume and hair keep flipping colors for no particular reason and is very distracting. It is especially dumb as she should hold that in reserve to better lose the inevitable future pursuers. If they don't know she can flip colors, when she does so in a mall they may run right past her.
Fights were cool & gadgets were kinda cool.
Sets were way too blue screen and they felt like it. They didn't fool me enough, sorry.
No character development, really bad attempts at poetic/meaningful dialogue. Didn't care about characters at all.
Violet kept flipping between threatening the kid and saying she was his only defense. Be protective or not, dangit!
The bad guy was just the ultratypical uber baddy with no redeeming qualities whatsoever. In otherwords a 2 dimensional waste of space. He and almost everything in the flick was a walking cliche.
The fights did not build up. They skipped most of the final battle getting to the big bad guy and so it felt like earlier fights were harder. Kinda anti-climactic.

- There is the 12-year old boy chosen one who is obviously the protagonist's child.
- There is the stressing of the truce due to a vampire couple acting out of order.
- And then there is this bizarre magical vortex around a chick who cursed herself that may end the world.

I've surfed soo long
my eyeballs are red!!!!!
since the evil PsTB (actually the smart guys 'cause they deftly avoided being smacked down as pirate plunder) decided that today was limited release opening day for the Scanner Darkly
crap
which means my Keanu-withdraw must continue for another week- blah
while combating the shakes, i decided to utilize my much valuable free saturday time-
come on, you know......
scouring the internet for fun but useless bits of entertainment
hey, i toured PBS.com
(not a complete waste of day time- smirk)
anyway, when i was not enhancing my psuedo intellect
i discovered 2 VERY important things
DO NOT-- i repeat -- DO NOT search for Spidey 3 news online
there's enough spoiler info out there to enable visualization of the ENTIRE flick
major bummer
usually i'm a spoiler junky but i was looking forward to a little surprise with my Spidey
the only thing i can say now is- depite knowledge of pratically the ENTIRE story- i am still totally stoked about this new ep
YEAH BUDDY-it's a gonna be good
drool puddle on the keyboard
now for the second most important finding from my slackfest
http://betatestforum.com/bsg.html
this is a special treat for my fellow BSG fans undergoning their own fair share of forced cold turkey
i DARE you to follow through the entire story
(without cracking a single smile)
anywho, enough time wasting
time to redeem what's left of the day and do some work. . .
oh wait- why is it so dark outside?
p.s. in other news
watched couple of new summer offerings
ABC Famly channel's Kyle XY (also available from itunes) and USA's Psych
Kyle, okay sci fi/teen show for wasting precious summer time hours
and Psych, not really sci fi but you WILL crack up; but hopefully not literally 'cause i am so not cleaning that up
enjoy your day (or what's left of it)
Visine endorsement now ended

Spidey 3 trailer, Night Watch and other drool worthy net news
unlike the rest of the bambozeled masses, i was not stirred by the release of the New Adventures of SuperTorpedo man this week.
and all the better, for the lack of distraction allowed me to pay attention to the true "good stuff"
we've got a trailer now for Spidey 3 and i must say----- i almost did a cart wheel (but since i have NO coordination or balance, the trick was all in my mind)
some may think its pretty sad to be geeked and geared up for a flick not set for release until May of next year-
WHATEVER!!!!
click here and join the madness
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/spiderman_3/trailers.php
Night Watch or Nochnoi Dozor for the bilingual is at Blockbuster or Hollywood
I've got only one comment:
RENT / BUY this movie!!!!!!!!!!!!
if i said anything else about the flick i'd spoil it
but i must say, i'm glad Gorbie tore down the red iron blanket that use to choke this nation 'cause they've got some freakin' good writers & producers in the rough over there
p.s. you MUST watch it in the original Russian and read the subtitles. the English dub changes the dialgue to fit the actors mouths but the subtitled translations perfectly fit the plot, tone and text of the movie. you WILL missing some major kool points if you wig out USA style and click on the english dub
and now for a Keanu moment
(smell the sweet lavender and roses, feel the gentle warmeth of the summer sun rays. . .)
just one more week to go
http://filmforce.ign.com/objects/670/670907.html
i'd say that i'm totaly stoked and in 5th gear, but i think that'd be repetitive
also in the wind is a big ball of fire burning up a skyscraper near you
http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/ghostrider/
typically i avoid the dark comics like taking a midnight stroll alone in an abandon cementary, but since Keanu drew me in with Constantine i'll dabbled just a bit (a bit meaning i have now seen Blade- whoa). i don't plan to move into the neighborhood but Ghost Rider has also caught my eye.
the summertime cinematrain is almost in full swing (notice how i said "almost"- just another attempt to diss that huge sparkling bit of eyecandy that has overpowered the sensiblities of comic and sci fi fans alike. it's like Star Wars: The Phantom Menace all over again.
look beyond the CGI and kool camera tricks and recognize just what they've done to our Supes
truth, justice and all that other stuff- WHATEVER
i say if you have to see it (ahem) don't pay to see it
you didn't hear that from me
and DON'T assume i'm referencing illegal mechanisms
at some point, at some time, it will be broadcasted for free on somebody's network
save 5 bucks or 2 and wait for it
maybe the PsTB will get the message
