The Angels Take Manhattan

I watched the final episode of Amy Pond this weekend, now we can get back to our regularly scheduled Doctor Who.  As you can tell, I am not a big fan of Amy Pond.  I do however love Rory as a companion.  The two are a package deal, I guess, as this weeks episode was their final.

Weeping Angels and a final episode for companions are ingredients that should make for a great episode.  Blink only had one of those and is probably my favorite hour of TV, ever.  This episode was very lackluster except for a part near the end with Rory and Amy that was actually quite good.  Shame it didn't end there, and the rest of the episode was an incoherent ball of timey wimeyness with a plot so full of holes that even the holes had holes.  Yes, the statue of liberty is a weeping angel.  It is a fun idea, but you got to throw that one away once you think about it.

Well, the companion is dead, long live the companion.

Friday Quiz- The companion quiz

I am calling this the companion quiz.  We will be testing your knowlege on various companions, mostly from the New Series (as that is where my knowledge lies).  Wouldn't Emma Watson make a great companion.  Also, I am having trouble leaving comments on some blogs for some reason right now, so know that I am lurking.

$400-  Susan was the first companion and generally referred to the Doctor as this familial term
$800-  This companion got her own spin off show.
$1200- She is the companion pictured on this page.
$1600- After serving with the tenth doctor, she went on to serve with Unit and Torchwood.
$2000- He is the male companion to 9th doctor in the new 1st season that is expelled for bad behavior.

Good Luck!

Friday Quiz-Doctor Who

$200-  Stephen Mophet intrduced us to these crying statues in the episode Blink (one of the best hours in television history in my opinion)
$400-  This is the name of the Doctor's current female Companion.
$600-  He played the 10th doctor (my favorite).
$800-  She was the first companion of the new series.
$1000-  River Song was introduced in this episode.

Good Luck Everyone.

Game of Thrones/Doctor Who

It was a pretty good weekend for Genre Television.  Saturday night brought Doctor Who to America (in a stetson no less), and Sunday night was the second episode of Game of Thrones.  Doctor Who opens with a bang and tells us what the mission of this season is going to be right off the bat.  It is going to be fun as they reveal the little details throughout.

Game of Thrones was good.  My wife actually wants to watch it with me, although she is not a fan of all the sex and nudity.  This should die down somewhat in upcoming episodes, but I imagine they will work it in whenever story dictates.  They are moving slow on the series and that is good, but I am not sure they are doing a good job of showing how much time has passed.  We got to know Jon a little better this episode.  Hopefully he gets a haircut at the wall.  I really hate Cersie.

All answers must be in the form of a question, answer in the comments, and no cheating. First person with all the correct answers or the most correct answers by Monday will get a coveted SciFi Media "no prize" button to display on their website.

This weeks quiz is in honor of Valentine's Day and will deal with love and relationships.

1.  On Buffy the Vampire Slayer Willow goes all dark when this girlfriend is shot by Warren.

2.  This long time couple met as part of the first X-Men team and have lived through each other dying a number of times.  They have even gone into the future to raise their son.

3.  On Supernatural, Sam has a relationship with this demon that leads to a demon blood addiction.

4.  Her character marries Aragorn and was given a larger role in the Lord of the Rings movies where she was played by Liv Tyler.

5.  In Doctor Who, the good Doctor is copied into a paralell universe so that some version of him can be with this love played by Billie Piper.

Bonus for you Trek fans:  This Batgirl actress also seduced kirk as the Orion Slave Girl in Star Trek.

Extra hard look it up bonus-  These catwoman actresses also had roles on Star Trek.

How about this Friday the 13th character?

For the trifecta of slasher royalty, Name this Halloween Character.

This movie blends Bloody Mary with the story of a murdered slave and is set in Chicago's Cabrini Green.

Blogfest top 10 TV shows

Opening for 1985's The Twilight ZoneImage via Wikipedia
Alex J. Cavanaugh is hosting a blogfest today on top 10 TV shows.  As this is a Science Fiction website my list will consist solely of Science Fiction shows.  These are all my opinion and I will try to give reasons why I feel that way.  Feel free to disagree.  Let me know if I missed something completely obvious.

10.  My Secret Identity-  This little known gem starred Jerry O'Connell as a teen that was given superpowers in a lab experiment gone wrong.
9.   Spaced- It wasn't technically Scifi, but it is referenced enough that it counts in my book.
8.   X-Men-  Yes, the 90's cartoon.  It kept the spirit of the comics and hit on some major story lines.  This show got me into comics.
7.   The BSG remake-  Or at least the first three seasons.  The last two, not so much.  No matter how it ended, it started really well.
6.   The new Doctor Who- The only show on the list that is currently in production.  I prefer the 10th Doctor.
5.   Firefly-  This show might not be on this list had it run for years, but it didn't and what we got was great and left us hungry for more.
4.   Star Trek TNG-  Star Trek has to be on here somewhere.  I loved this show growing up.  I wanted to be Geordi LaForge, he was the coolest.  Maybe I should have taken engineering classes instead of English.
3.   Farscape-  Muppets in space.  No really, Jim Henson's muppet factory designed a few of the aliens in this very clever and witty series.
2.   Babylon 5- It had a well thought out arc and was written extremely well. The cast was likable and the characters grew.
1.   The Twilight Zone-  Where would SciFi be on TV today without Rod Sterling.  The show continually makes you think.

I have not watched every scifi show ever, so I probably missed your favorite.  Let me know what I should be watching.

Doctor Who Finale-Spoiler Free Review

This season of Doctor Who  gave us a lot of changes.  We got a new Doctor, we got new companions, we got a new variation on the theme, we got a new show runner, we even got a new logo.  Needless to say the change was abrupt and almost didn't feel like the same show.

The season for the most part has been a monster of the week type theme that shouldn't surprise any Dr. Who fans.  We were visited by the Daleks, the Weeping Angels, and some new creations as well.  These were all tied together with the crack in the wall that would ineveitably show up.

The first half of the finale sets us up with lots of promise.  We get a rogues gallery of Dr. Who villians, River Song and a character that we all thought was gone.  The first half has suspense and a great cliff hanger.  The second half turns into a comedy.  Time travel is about as deux ex machina as you can get, but then the Dr. goes all Bill and Ted on us, or maybe it was an homage to the Mister Bean spoof episode (strangely, written by one Stephen Moffat), but the episode slips into slapstick and paradoxes.

Overall the season was just average with "The Hungry Earth" being my favorite of the season.  Matt Smith's Doctor is almost played as an Idiot Savante.  It is a different take on things that is for sure.  Because of this there is a need for a strong overbearing companion.  Amy fills this pretty well and River Song lets us know that it isn't going to stop.  As Rory is a rather weak willed character too, I wonder what Stephen Moffat is saying.

Hopefully next season is better.
