Walking Dead Season 2

Walking Dead season 2 had been kind of just rolling along until last night.  Great episode with a great reveal at the end.  Daryl is slowly becoming my favorite character.  We have an unwanted pregnancy that may be reveal an affair.  If you haven't been watching the show, you need to check it out.  Great show.  

Terra Nova

Terra Nova as I explained to my kids, means new Earth.  Which isn't actually the case here.  It should be Terra Antiquus, as our heroes are traveling back in time to escape an Earth they destroyed.  I got some basic problems with the story, but I will get back to them at the end.

The two hour premier did a pretty good job of introducing the characters.  The initial scene set up the world and got the viewer emotionally invested.  We understand what kind of family this is and what they will do for each other.  Special effects are at a tv level.  They did an overall good job on the dinosaurs, but apparently they didn't get the news that dinosaurs have feathers.

Overall it was pretty good show with enough story revealed that I will be tuning back in.  I think they showed too much of their hand at the very end, though.  I was completely willing to go along with not knowing about that for a couple of episodes.  Or maybe just a partial explanation, but they revealed the whole thing.

My problems would be with basic things in the story.  A wife that works in public hospitals has the ability to collect a rucksack full of money.  A future high security prison that someone is able to sneak/bribe her way into and pass off a laser that allows escape.  A rucksack full of money lying pretty much in the open.  Being able to bribe your way onto a launch window.  Those are just a couple of the things.

The show wasn't perfect, but it was pretty good.  I was willing to overlook or ignore most of the little problems though and that is a pretty good sign.  Apparently, only attractive people get to travel to Terra Nova so that is a plus.  It is worth a watch though.  Glad I gave it a shot.

Game of Thrones/Doctor Who

It was a pretty good weekend for Genre Television.  Saturday night brought Doctor Who to America (in a stetson no less), and Sunday night was the second episode of Game of Thrones.  Doctor Who opens with a bang and tells us what the mission of this season is going to be right off the bat.  It is going to be fun as they reveal the little details throughout. 

Game of Thrones was good.  My wife actually wants to watch it with me, although she is not a fan of all the sex and nudity.  This should die down somewhat in upcoming episodes, but I imagine they will work it in whenever story dictates.  They are moving slow on the series and that is good, but I am not sure they are doing a good job of showing how much time has passed.  We got to know Jon a little better this episode.  Hopefully he gets a haircut at the wall.  I really hate Cersie. 

Mid-Season TV update

It is pretty close to the mid-season mark on the TV schedule and my viewing patterns have changed a little.  

The late starter- The Walking Dead is my must see fix every week.  Unfortunately it only has two new episodes in the can. 

The surpriser- Supernatural isn't half bad this season.  I still think that last season's finale would have been a perfect season finale, but soulless Sam has my interest. 

The why did I even bother- The Event didn't hold my interest given a couple episodes, so I gave up and moved on. 

The consistent- SGU is a show I look forward to every week.  It isn't The Walking Dead or even Supernatural, but it is pretty good. 

The forgotten- Oh crap, I missed No Ordinary Family. . . Again. Oh well. This is a weekly occurance, I guess this means that I don't care for the show. It did entertains somewhat, but felt really slow. 

NBC's the cape will start Mid-Season and I will give it a try.  I have also started watching Sons of Anarchy, which is pretty good.

The Walking Dead on AMC-Spoiler Free

The Walking Dead on AMC pretty much rocked.  It is pretty brutal stuff and I see why they put the disclaimer at the beginning. 

The show is about people.  So far, I care about every character they have developed.  That is great because it creates immediate tension.  The characters all seem to have depth as well.

The creep out factor is pretty good.  One or two zombies are cool looking but not creepy, but the hordes are super creepy and super tense.  The FX are better than most zombie movies, I am looking at you zombie strippers.

This is going to be a show that I look forward to watching on a weekly basis. 

Fall Genre Shows

I will preface this by saying that I watch too much TV. I was actually kind of relieved that two of my favorite shows were ending last year. Lost did end, but Supernatural decided to ruin a great series finale and come back for a 6th season to be discussed below. So I am being a bit more critical with new shows this year as I don’t need to watch any more TV than I already do.

The Event: Caught the second episode, and I no longer have to watch. It went from being a Scifiesque type show to being an allegory for fear in the age of terror/political thriller. Not that the show was overwhelmingly interesting to begin with, but the hook at the end made me perk up my ears for the second episode. Nothing in episode two made me want to continue watching the show. This show may end up being amazing, but if that is the case, I guess I will just have to catch up on DVD.

Chuck: This is a fun family show as always. Sure it pushes the boundaries a little, but it comes on at 8/7central. Every time the show starts getting stale they do a little to change it up. This year they are bringing in cameos galore. Already we have seen Lou Ferrigno, Olivia Munn, and Dolph Lundgren with promises of many more. Look out for Nicole Ritchie and Stone Cold Steve Austin next week. It is a fun show that kind of falls on the guilty pleasures list.

No Ordinary Family: Watched this last night. Again, it seems like a pretty family friendly show that comes on at a family friendly time. It is a little early to make a final judgment, but it looks pretty good. What helps set the show apart is that the family has problems. The dad is unemployed, the mom is a workaholic, the daughter is a girl in high school, and the son has a learning disorder, then their plane crashes and all of a sudden, they have to deal with super powers. The acting was good, there is drama, and there is comedy. It looks like this one will be fun.

SGU: The show got pretty good in the last half of the first season. The final cliffhanger was intense with everyone’s lives in the balance for different reasons. To be honest, I think they thought they were being cancelled and if that would have happened everyone would have died. They weren’t cancelled and the first episode of the second season was about getting themselves out of that great big corner. It wasn’t smooth, it wasn’t graceful, and it wasn’t the greatest of episodes. It does look like they are laying some groundwork mysteries to be solved throughout the rest of the season. I will stick it out with SGU, because when it is good, it can be real good.

Wrasslin: Hey it is on SyFy right? No? okay, but I fell in love with AJ from NXT. She is a self confessed nerd, but that might be part of her character. She was wearing a I heart nerds t-shirt last night. NXT is not good TV, but they are doing divas which are fun to look at. Smack Down is moving to SyFy this week and they are bringing back the supernatural overtones of Undertaker and Cain to celebrate.

Supernatural: Speaking of supernatural, Supernatural returned for a 6th and final(?) season. This is a great show and as I said earlier had the perfect series finale at the end of season 5. CW is milking it for all it is worth, but the first episode was still pretty good and not farfetched at all considering what has happened in past seasons. I wanted the show to end, because I wanted it to end while it was still good. I am not sure about 6.1 but they are setting some stuff up that could be interesting. Needless to say, I am in for the long haul on this one. Don’t watch this on CWTV.com. The player sucks and freezes a lot, plus you will get less commercials just watching it on the air.
