SciFi I Am Thankful For

Tron (film)Image via Wikipedia
Jeffery Beesler over at his World of the Scribe has a blogfest going on about thankfulness.  Be sure to go to his site and check out all the participating enteries.

For the SciFi Media take on thankfulness I am going to pick a book and movie that I am thankful for, past, present, and future.  So here it goes.

Past- For movies I would have to go with Flash Gordon and Starwars.  I am thankful for them for getting me interested in the science fiction medium.  As for books, I am thankful for Dune for igniting that same love in books, or maybe reigniting.

Present-I am pretty thankful that they are finally making a sequel to Tron.  As books go I am thankful to the creative team on Fables and am quite thankful that I got Windup Girl as a free Download (I need an e-reader so I can read it).

Future- I am very excited to see Sucker Punch and am thankful that Zach Snyder is getting the freedom to do it.  I am also thankful they got Karl Urban to play Judge Dred.  In the book front it is hard to see the future, but I am thankful we have people like Neal Stephenson and John Scalzi carrying that torch.

So what books and movies are you thankful for?  Or, what are you thankful for in general?  Let me know.

I'm thankful for comic book superheroes, the characters of which I most like to write about. There's something about people doing superhuman feats which makes me thankful that such a genre exists.

Great post!

Nice to meet you and thank you for leaving a comment on my blog.

I am thankful for J. R. R. Tolkien and C. S. Lewis, Lord of the Rings and Narnia respectfully. And I am thankful that the movie people are not butchering these books for a profit but have stayed pretty much on track. (Oh, that's for profit too.)

I'm thankful for a many number of books- how about this, I';m thankful for books in general because they give the ability to see the world different and can also teach a writer many things

I'm thankful for book: Red Lightning movie: Kick Ass TV Show: Walking Dead (like a 6 hour movie)

Jeffrey- Yes, superheros rock.

N.R.- I wish Hollywood would realize there is money in making movies true to the books, but I guess there is money in not doing that too.

Summer- Yes, books in general are great and to more modern extent, E-Readers (though I don't have one yet).

Chris- Not familiar with Red Lightning, have you reviewed it? Link?

great tie-in to your blog theme. I love the past and all the things that introduced me to the imaginative worlds of scifi and fantasy.
Happy Thanksgiving

Nice list. For movies I am thankful for Star Wars (the original trilogy, that is) and Back to the Future. And I agree with Summer on books - I'm simply grateful there are so many to enjoy.

Happy Thanksgiving!

oh, DUNE and FLASH GORDON were my absolute favourites when I was a kid. Two films which brought some magic, dreams and imagination to my childhood.

Nice to meet you Budd. Thanks for stopping by my Thanksgiving post.

I'm thankful they've just put out another Narnia movie. Will be great. Liked your list.:)

So you live in Seoul, eh? Not so far from Oz.

Alex-Thanks and a happy turkey day to you.

Mary-You too.

Linda-Thanks, it can sometimes be hard to tie things into my theme.

Dez-I prefer the 80s dune movie to the scifi mini.

L'Aussie-thanks, actually I am in Boston, but I lived near Seoul for a while.

It's interesting you mentioned Flash Gordon and Star Wars together since George Lucas borrowed things from Flash Gordon because he loved the show. Dune and Tron also are good choices.

For me, Star Wars and Robotech spurred my interest in science fiction when I was young, so I am thankful for them. But there are so many other science fiction books and movies that I enjoy, I cannot possibly list them all.

Reid- That was the hardest part, narrowing down the list. I would watch Star Wars and Flash Gordon anytime they were on as a kid.

Considering where I am, I'll stick with scifi for my answers... Snow Crash. 'Twas the first in the genre I remember simply loving (and then recommending to everyone I met).

As for movies, creativity and mood pull me in more than the traditional scifi elements. I'll pick a trio from the past 15 years: Dark City, City of Lost Children, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Great list, Budd. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Nate-Snow crash is excellent as is Dark City. Great picks!

I am thankful for my health and for great authors.

Oh yeah, Tron! It sure took a long time.
I wonder if you read any Robert Heinlein?
That's what got me started. For instance although the movie "Starship Troopers" was a stinker (in my eyes), the book was GREAT. If you haven't already, check his stuff out...
Great post!

Sci Fi I am Thankful for:

PAST
Book – Neuromancer by William Gibson. Cyberpunk.
Movie – Blade Runner. And cyberpunk again.

PRESENT
Book – The Passage by Justin Cronin. Vampire virus apocalypse.
Movie – Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Not scifi actually, haven’t seen it, but it is the only speculative fiction I am even halfway interested in. Skyline looks stupid. Bored of superheroes so no Green Lantern for me.

FUTURE
Book – Zero History by William Gibson. Possibly not sci fi but it is a book am actually anticipating. The Sequel to the Passage as well.
Movie – Iron Sky. Foreign sci-fi comedy about Nazis who hid on the dark side of the moon and re-invade in 2018.

April- and the health of great authors!

Pat- It did take a long time. the original starts kind of slow, though.

Nick- Thanks for the heads up on Iron Sky.

I need to go back and re-watch Tron before watching the new one... I have forgotten too much of the original. My friend warned my though that watching the original Tron now is a wake up call to how bad it was. I'll watch it anyway.
